For what it’s worth, a hot take: the Christmas card industry at large–wholesome as it may appear–robs from us one of the lowest risk, highest reward expressions of affection: making a dang card.
This small act of affection has proved to deliver an outsized amount of joy for me over the last few years and, primitive as my tools and skills are, the efficiencies and anomalies of a quick block print make this small ritual one I look forward to and savor each December.
Regardless of the quality (or any performance pressure therein), I’d wager that making any mark on any real life piece of paper and then putting said piece of paper in the mail to be delivered through real life space and time is, in fact, more satisfying for both the sending and receiving parties than just about any Amazon package could be…as Nick Offerman sweetly says:
“If you make things together, even if even if you’re making a card and just doing a clumsy drawing, [it’s] going to deliver so much love to your family member, and that’s good work.“
&
“…make your loved one a gift, even just a card. It goes a hell of a lot further than purchased crap towards getting you kissed.”
